Somebody asked for craps reviews. Here you go. Hollywood Casino has three craps tables and one crapless craps table. They have $10 minimums most of the time and $15 minimums nights and weekends when it's busy. These tables do feature fire bets. The dealers are friendly and knowledgeable. This casino also has a $5 bubble craps machine. $5 is a little steep, if you ask me, for bubble craps but they do have one.
Hollywood has a reputation for producing blockbuster movies, but over the next couple of weeks another type of event is expected to take place here. Poker players are enthusiastic about the prospect of spending a couple of days participating in the Hollywood Poker Open. In 2014, the number of American players expected to attend this tournament is significantly higher than one year ago, which means that the competition will be more intense. Some of them have honed their skills over the Internet and poker rooms such as Sky Poker, but only those who reside within the borders of New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada can play legally. Things will probably change in 2015 and beyond, but for the time being live tournaments represent the highlight of the month for poker players. Season three will begin this November, in Indiana and players should jump on the bandwagon because the next stop is scheduled for February. Those who miss out on the opening event will have to wait three months, which is a long time for those who appreciate the thrills of live poker tournaments. Last season, the Hollywood Poker Open sent many players to the championship event, with a total of 200 competing for real money. Both amateurs and poker professionals are expected to attend the opening event and even more will probably participate in the tournaments scheduled for 2015. Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg in Indiana will be the gracious host for the first tournament and the registration has already begun. The number of players who announced their intention to participate is on par with the expectations, but their numbers will probably soar as kickoff draws near. There are a couple of professionals who signed up and Chris Moneymaker will be one of them, as a tournament ambassador for season three. Casino in town hiring, need advice. What makes a good dealer?
I just moved back to my hometown in Columbus, Ohio and our downtown Hollywood Casino is hiring Blackjack dealers. I've never played Blackjack before in my life, to be honest. Would I be an idiot for trying to become a dealer with no prior experience in the game? I'm a 26-year old female with a college degree. I work in a library part time and need another side gig to make some money. Side note: this casino is offering free, unpaid training in Blackjack dealing for 8 weeks. After completing their dealer school, an audition is given to you for a potential job. Any thoughts? Could a newbie learn the game easily? What makes a good dealer and how much do you make on average?
Got a promotion and being moved to another location in Ohio, near Ashland. My wife and I have enjoyed smaller casinos in SW Michigan. We've had the ability to bet low limits most of the time or drive an hour to Indiana were we can consistently find $5 tables. I compiled a list of casinos within a 2 1/2 hour drive of us. Questions about mid-Ohio (Columbus/Cleveland) casinos
My wife and I have been spoiled living in SW Michigan over the last 10 years. We have 3 casinos within 40 minutes of us and another 2 just over an hour if we drive to the MI/IN line. Most of them have $5 dollar tables at some point during the week/weekend and some all of the time. I'm deep into an interview that would put me between Columbus and Cleveland. I like that Ohio has no smoking in their casinos. I've been to a Hollywood Casino before in Toledo. Seemed like during the week there were $5 tables before 5 and they go up to $10 or higher at night. I've never been not he weekend. I read that when Columbus opened their tables were 15/25 most of the time, but that seems to have died down. What are their table minimums like and do they ever have $5 tables? I haven't been to any of the casinos (Jack Cleveland, or the racinos) so I know nothing about them. What can you tell me? I looked at the drives from where we would be living. We might look at going to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh (a city that I love and miss living in). Don't know much about that place as it was built after I moved away. We also could look at Moutaineer RaceTrack in northern WV. If all else fails, we will look at driving to Wheeling, WV to go to Wheeling Island as we know they always have lower minimums. As part of being a good neighbour, Hollywood is committed to working with west side organizations through partnerships, volunteerism and charitable giving. Summer Jam West also has a vision, an art movement that they foresee has the potential to bring about economic change and growth to the Hilltop. Each year, Summer Jam West installs major, public art on the Hilltop. In the process of planning, “Hilltop Rising” for the 2018 music and arts festival, they realized the Hollywood Casino property was closely positioned to the highest point on the Hilltop. They contacted Hollywood with a proposition to not only help fund the sculpture, but to allow Summer Jam West to feature it on their property. It took surprisingly little convincing. They were on board from the beginning. Andrew Lundberg of Lundberg Industrial Arts in Franklinton was awarded the commission to build the sculpture. Rising up from Hollywood's property alongside Georgesville Rd, will be Andrew's vision of a Phoenix. Summer Jam West board members loved his concept because it not only embraced their theme of “Hilltop Rising” and encouraged public interaction, but because it will be built with a mixture of raw metals that brings forth a reminder of the long gone Delphi GM manufacturing plant. The Phoenix represents being born anew, out of the ashes; how we as a community are growing towards becoming vibrant once more. Summer Jam West believes that everyone is entitled to art, regardless of income or address. They feel strongly that if they can awaken new habits and fresh thinking in one generation, they can brighten the future of the next. We had a great weekend and obviously packed a lot in, as we tend to do. Columbus reminds me of Cleveland in a lot of ways (naturally), except (as we heard from multiple people), Columbus likes new things and doesn't seem to appreciate old/historic places much. Its quite the contrast to Cleveland where anything that's old is preserved and protected and often inhibits development/progress. FRIDAY We got into town and went directly to Hoof Hearted. We split a burger and fries, which was fantastic. The beer was OK. I really had my hopes up but nothing really tickled my fancy. Funny story, it took me until Saturday morning to realized it was a play on words. I was over enunciating Hoof Hearted instead of who farted. From there, we checked into our hotel room. I won't say where because we had an significant issue with cleanliness in our room. We didn't ask for anything really special, they gave us a new room and a couple courtesy incidentals that we didn't even use. It was nice. From there we decided to just bar hop around the hotel. We started at Barley's Brewing Company. We each had a beer and split an appetizer. We really liked the classic interior and great cheese. Then we went to Denmark. The drinks pretty good and we loved the staircase, even though we were a little under dressed. I had an Ol' Fashioned, she had a dirty martini. The last stop was Char Bar. Nothing remarkable about this place except that it reminded us of a local dive bar we've gone to for 8 years to drink cheap and dance all night. SATURDAY First stop was OSU campus to pick up my cousin for brunch. We went to North Star Cafe and the food was really good. We split a burger, salad, and bowl of soup. The price seemed a quite a bit high, even though the food was good. From there, we moved to the Columbus Brew Adventure walking tour of the Brewery District. This was a great tour. There were 12 people in our tour group, plus the guide. We started at CBC and were given 2 flight-size beers each and family style loaded nachos, mexican pizza, and pretzels with cheese. From there we went to Rockmill, which specialized in Saison's made with well water. We were given 3 flight-size beers, along with a baked breaded and seasoned bowl with an egg, cheese sauce, and pepperoni on it. We loved the historic building, the appetizer was great, the beers were good, and we loved the atmosphere - even though the wooden interior caused my allergies to act up (old horse barns). From there we moved to Copious for 2 rock-sized glass of beer, a sour and a stout, 1 was from Platform - a Cleveland brewery. The space was really nice, but the owner basically was giving us a sales pitch instead of history lesson. From there we moved to Arepazo for a sugar cane cocktail and some sort of fried empanada appetizer? The appetizer was fantastic, but I don't care for tequila. The last stop was Brick. The basement atmosphere was incredible... would love to spend more time there. We were given another rock-sized glass of beer along with fried salmon patties and fried beef egg rolls (for lack of better term). We had planned to go to Forno for dinner since the tour was described as "light finger food." It was far more than "light." So, instead we checked out the river front near the Supreme Court. That was a fantastic park and river front use across from COSI. Being from Cleveland, we have about 5% of our water front developed and is very disappointing when we see so many other cities and communities invest in such nice public/green space. We still flew the drone even though it was over cast. It was my first time flying for the season, so we didn't get a ton of good photos/video. From there we went to Hollywood Casino. Nothing note worthy. We left with more money than we started with. We ended the night getting some Late Night Slice pizza. I was craving it all week. The pizza was pretty good but the sauces just put it over the top. SUNDAY Breakfast was at DK Diner. We loved the atmosphere, loved the location. From there, we decided to just walk around downtown for a little. Get a feel for the buildings, the architecture. We tried to find a winery for a bottle but had no luck. We got back to the hotel and checked out North Market. I wish we would have known about this earlier. We would have went every day. It reminded us of a smaller West Side Market. We had some samples, bought some drinks, bought some food. I ended up buying a Make Your Own 6 (5) Pack and filled it with Land Grant and Wolf Ridge. We were proud to see so many Cleveland breweries represented. After North Market, we went to Seventh Son. We are glad we went here last, because if we found it first, we wouldn't have gone anywhere else. The beer was really good, the atmosphere was fantastic. It was totally our type of a place, a "come as you are," place... a local start up, taking lemons and making orange juice. We bought a shirt and cup. We will be back, 100%. On the way home, we stopped at Ariel-Foundation Park. This was a really cool area, especially for the drone. We flew for about 30-40 mins. We were hoping for a guided tour, but it wasn't in-season. We were hoping to get some more of a history lesson on the area and glass making. Unfortunate they just had some plaques with a line or 2 about the area or history. We had a great time. Columbus is definitely a clean city, which we appreciate. It also seems your traffic patterns/roads are about as stupid as ours in Cleveland. We are looking to plan an overnight trip in the fall sometime. The goal being to check out the Zoo, Curio, a nicer restaurant like Forno, and Park of Roses. Royal Flush and Straight flush hit in the same poker hand for the same player!
This hand occurred on a 2-5 no limit table at the Hollywood Casino in Columbus Ohio this past Saturday night. Two players left in the hand after the flop and we got the chips all in after the flop. When a player is all in, some casinos allow the players to run the turn card, or the turn and the river cards twice, to give the all-in player a chance to stay alive. A player needs to win both hands to claim the full pot. Sometimes the pot winds up being split. In this very rare situation, player A (K of hearts, 10 of hearts) had a King high flush and player B (7 of heats, 6 of hearts) had a Queen high flush after the turn. Of course they did not know what each other had at that time. That is when player B went all in. The players agreed to run the river card twice and both hands were turned over. Player A was drawing dead at this point. Player B hits the Royal Flush on the first river card, and then hits the K high straight flush on the second hand. The odds of hitting a Royal Flush is about 1 in 20,000 if the player has two of the cards in their hand. So I had an amazing Derby trip. So I decided to do a Diary of just what went on plus an AMA for anyone who wants to know how we did it. Day one: We left from Columbus, OH on thursday. We stay every year in Covington, KY just over the bridge from Ohio. We went big this year and rented a limo for our thursday night party. First stop: Jeff Ruby's The Precinct. A yearly tradition of one of the best steaks around. Pricey? yes. Minimum steak price is like 45 dollars. But really worth it. The Freddie salad is almost as good, plus the mac and Cheese is amazing. From there we go to Hollywood casino in Lawerenceburg, IN. Next year we probably will go to the newer HorseShoe casino. Lost about 100 dollars playing 3 card pokeblackjack. Had so much fun. Drunken night ended up at WaffleHouse. around 3 am. Day 2: We recovered from the night before the whole day. Got a burger at Terry's Turf Club. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but not the worst either. Night out on Mainstrauss Village for some drinks and Fish and Chips at the Cock and Bull pub. Ended the night at Arnie's club at Newport on the levee. Another drunken Waffle House trip. Day 3: Derby day!!! Got an early start, left the Hotel at 9 am. Made it to our parking place on Evelyn ave, the Baptist church around 1015. Got into Churchhill around 1030 just in time to bet race 3. Our seats were amazing. Section 120. Got a Lobster Roll, which I look forward to every year. My friend and I were splitting .50 trifecta box tickets for 6 dollars each. we picked 4 horses off the DRF and the Racing form I got for 3 dollars. We ended up hitting two tri's during the day and split the winnings. 73 dollars on one and 32 dollars on the other. Before the Derby I placed the horseracing trifecta ticket and placed all my bets. I bet 106 on my personal bets. We all picked a horse and placed a 1 dollar superfecta box ticket for 24 dollars. The race before the Derby was amazing. Wise Dan refused to lose. I bet against him on a couple tickets so at the start of the race I was rooting against him...by the top of the stretch I was screaming for him to win. Gutsy performance. Soooo Good. Derby time!!!! All four of us picked Chrome. We have never all picked the same horse. I usually put 30 across the board on my derby horse. But this year I only did 10. I used the rest of the money on exotic tri's. I also picked 5 long shot horses and put 2 across the board on them. It paid off. I had 17 wps that paid around 40 dollars while my chrome ticket paid 86. I ended up 20 up on the derby. My friend picked this exotic tri from the DRF. It was a 42 dollar ticket that paid 865 total. So excited for him. After we cashed our tickets we had an old boss who goes every year to the derby. He was in a section over from us that costs 25k every five years just for the seat license to buy the tickets. Right on the track, front row. He invited us over to watch the last two races. So we jumped the barrier over to his box. It was spectacular. We fed the escort horses, or outrider horses. Got access to the second floor grandstand which is crazy. We bet the last two races. The last race started right in front of us. Pretty amazing. Time to Leave the track: We had no idea how to get out. We were in a section that is not accessible to normal people. So we took these steps down from the section we were squatting in. It led us to the path the horses take to get on the track. We were part giddy kids, part scared we were going to get arrested. The road opened up to the Paddock!! At this point there were no horses, only about 10 people, a few camera crews filming wrap ups and us. We spotted Baffert and my friend got a picture with him. Took some pics and got out of there. The security were shaking their heads as we left, they knew we weren't supposed to be there. A quick stop to get a pic on the red carpet and we were gone!!!
